Sharpening your kitchen knives? You can do it yourself!

Are your kitchen knives in need of a fix? Want to slice tomatoes without having to worry about your blade? Cut through chicken with one single stroke? Why not sharpen your knives yourself! It is not difficult at all, anyone can do it. Even after sharpening a couple of times you will already start saving money and end up with razor-sharp knives. Who wouldn’t want that?

Fast & easy or razor-sharp?

When sharpening your knives you need to keep in mind that you can do two things. On the one hand you can sharpen them quickly and easily, leaving you with reasonably good results. Perfect when you don’t have a lot of time or are not in the mood to become an expert. On the other hand you can strive for razor-sharpness: it might take a little more time and effort, but you end up with a much sharper blade. Soon even sharper than it was when you held it for the first time. The choice is yours!

Quickly and easily sharpen your own kitchen knives

Ah, you want to sharpen your knives without the fuss? Great! Let’s make it happen! With these sharpening methods that will suit any budget you will go a long way.

Sharpening steels

The sharpening steel removes very little material, making your knife even sharper. In addition, with a sharpening steel you can sharpen a bread knife. When you frequently use a knife you can definitely also regularly use a sharpening steel. Your knife will remain sharp and you can postpone the ‘actual sharpening’ with a sharpening stone or machine a little while longer.

Pull-through knife sharpeners

Knife sharpeners are useful little devices with ceramic wheels that sharpen your knife. The knife sharpeners - also called pull-through knife sharpeners - will quickly and easily leave you with sharp knives. In addition to sharpening your kitchen knives you can also use this tool to sharpen your table knives.

Electric sharpeners

The speed at which you sharpen your knives is considered to be a big advantage of electric knife sharpeners. Compared to sharpening stones, you'll barely have any clean-up after sharpening. Electric sharpeners are also extremely easy to use. You place the heel of your knife in the slot and make a cutting movement - without applying pressure - until you reach the tip of the knife.

For razor-sharp kitchen knives

Razor-sharp still isn’t sharp enough for you? You don’t mind putting in a little more effort and time? Awesome! We have the best methods for you to get exactly what you are looking for. Factory sharp? We can do better than that!

Sharpening stones

You are still, however, left with the best results if you use the 'old-fashioned' sharpening stones, also called whetstones. Is sharpening on sharpening stones easy? No. Is it difficult? Not at all! At first it might take a little getting used to, but with some experience everyone can sharpen their knives on a sharpening stone. Sharper than with any other sharpening method.

Sharpening systems

The main advantage of a sharpening system is that you'll always have the desired sharpening angle. If you're sharpening with water stones, for example, getting the right angle is always a matter of trying it out and hoping for the best. With a sharpening system, you can accurately adjust the angle. As such, you'll always sharpen your knives as razor-sharp as the last time you sharpened them!

Stropping

By polishing the blade burrs and other imperfections are removed leaving you with even sharper knives. The main advantage is that by stropping your knife you do not remove metal particles, you simple ‘align’ the metal. As such your knife becomes razor-sharp without losing any material.
